Why they were invented
CANTEBURY CONCEPTS grabrails were born out of
the frustration of trying to install standard fixed
length rails to walls with timber or steel studs that
were always positioned at centres that did not match
the length of the standard rail.
The problem
As a consequence of this one end could be secured but the other end was unstable.
A second problem often arose because the fixings were through the edges of the wall flange and only small screws could be used – these pull out the first time they have to take a load equal to a heavy person. Furthermore often only one of these small screws hits the stud and when the rail is angled both screws can miss, one going either side of the stud.

The solution
After many experiments the CANTERBURY CONCEPTS railing system was developed employing two simple concepts:-
- A single large concealed fixing
- A tube rail that can be cut to any length
These two concepts were applied as follows:
To overcome the problem of insecure fixing it was decided to use a single centre fixing in the wall flange large enough to take any anticipated load and to tighten it by either a socket spanner or large screw driver. The surface directly under the screw being slightly raised so that when the screw is tightened, the outer rim of the wall flange is forced hard against the wall providing lateral stability and a hygienic fit.
It’s simple – read on
To install the rail, the studs are located, the wall flanges are secured in position, the aluminum tube rail cut to length with a hacksaw, the system dry assembled to ensure perfect fit and then the components fixed together using the locking pin.
The end & connecting pieces are glass filled nylon and the tube is aluminum with a slip resistant powder coated finish.
As all of the fixings are concealed, when installation is complete the rails have smooth lines and a neat appearance.
